Description and Applications

hyJOIST is an engineered I-Joist manufactured using structural LVL flanges and a plywood web connected using a Type A waterproof bond.

Applications

hyJOIST is suitable for structural applications including residential and commercial floor and roof  rafter systems, and industrial purlins.  hyJOIST is not intended to support brickwork or other heavy masonry products.

Treatment for Durability

hyJOIST H2-S Terminator is available in all sizes and is part of the Carter Holt Harvey Terminator range.  hyJOIST H2-S Terminator is treated against termites south of the Tropic of Capricorn.  The treatment is applied to the glueline during manufacture to achieve full termite protection to the core of the beam.  No further sealing is required on cut ends or holes.

Moisture content

hyJOIST, at time of despatch from the manufacturing site has a moisture content of between 8-15%.

Structural grading

The properties of hyJOIST have been determined by testing as required by AS/NZS 4357, and are not substitutable for F grades, MGP grade, or other proprietary I-joists.  Design verification using the Carter Holt Harvey free designIT software or selection guide (located in the hyJOIST design guide) is required to ensure suitability.

Certification & Compliance

hyJOIST flanges are manufactured in accordance with AS/NZS 4357, and the plywood web is manufactured in accordance with AS/NZS 2269.  hyJOIST is product certified by the Engineered Wood Products Association of Australasia (EWPAA), which is JAS-ANZ certified.  Participation and compliance with this process based quality control scheme ensures ‘Evidence of Suitability’ in accordance with Clause 1.2.2 of the Building Code of Australia (BCA).

Formaldehyde Emissions

All hyJOIST is manufactured using an 'A' Bond with less than 0.3mg/l Formaldehyde (equivalent to Super E0) emissions from the final product.

Handling and Installation

Storage

The following recommendations regarding storage are made in order to ensure that the full benefits of hyJOIST as a dry, straight and true material are available at the time of installation.

  1. Stack on level bearers to keep flat and straight.
  2. Stack well clear of the ground for good ventilation.
  3. Store under cover to keep dry prior to installation.

Note: After installation, exposure to sun and rain for normal periods of construction is not a cause for concern.

General Installation

hyJOIST should be installed strictly in accordance with the details supplied in the hyJOIST Installation Guide.

Technical Note: Rimboard

Carter Holt Harvey sometimes receive requests to assist specifiers with technical advice on other generic products when used in conjunction with hySPAN LVL and hyJOIST Engineered I-Joists. The following Technical Note entitled 'Rimboard' is an example of this - Download.

Racking Through Floors

Modern house designs often feature large open plan living areas with large windows or doors to 'bring the outdoors inside'. In two storey houses this normally means deep section engineered floor joists capable of spanning over lower level open areas.
More information is contained in the hyJOIST design guide and hyJOIST installation guide

hyJOIST Cantilevers

hyJOIST floor joists are capable of meeting the loading requirements for cantilevers as defined in AS/NZS 1170. For external use, hyJOIST floor joists must be protected from becoming wet by a fully waterproof deck. In the case of non-waterproofed decks the use of outriggers of suitable natural durability or preservative treated to H3 as per AS/NZS 1604 is suggested. Outriggers can also provide a step down to the deck reducing the likelihood of water ingress at openings.
More information is contained in the hyJOIST design guide and hyJOIST installation guide.

Health & Safety

The MSDS available from the website details all health and safety precautions required when using hyJOIST

Environmental certification

hyJOIST is manufactured from 100% renewable plantation timber. All timber is sourced from Australian Forestry Standard and/or FSC certified forests.

platform 12 Cole

A house that's futurebuild through and through

Brad Cole, well known in the trade in New South Wales as technical manager for futurebuild distributor Dindas Lew, put his money where his mouth is. His new home was designed by Brad himself with the aim of using every engineered building product from the futurebuild range that was possible to use.

Structurally, the house is made up of two levels of flooring, a sub-floor and upper floor, designed and specified to include only LVL. As a result the house incorporates Hyspan upper and lower floor bearers, Hybeam upper and lower floor joists, Hypitch garage beams, Hypost verandah posts and Hychord bottom chords in trusses. Hyplank LVL Scaffold Planks were also used during construction. The style is modern contemporary with a painted cement render finish.

The Council required that the structure be lifted off the ground so Brad could not use a slab on ground but had to build a raised timber floor. This was another reason the futurebuild products proved ideal. The raised floor was easy to install and Brad achieved an enhanced floor performance with the Hybeam members. As Brad explains:

"I designed the floors for enhanced stiffness. When joists are used to their maximum spans you will have minimum floor performance as per the Australian Standards but this may not necessarily match the expectations of the home owner. It's very important that designers and builders consider this. To improve the rigidity of the floor you can use a deeper section joist, reduce the span or close the joist centres. I selected a Hybeam to meet my performance requirements and for peace of mind."

Another reason for building the LVL house was, for Brad, to also act as a kind of showcase for local builders to demonstrate to them what the products are capable of doing. As Brad tells it, he would tell them to come down to have a look at how the products were used and correctly installed. From the street, when the house was at frame stage, the observers were overwhelmed by the number of engineered products in it. "This translated into builder conversions", says Brad, "Quite a few local builders called in and have been inspired." The house is unique as a futurebuild showcase and Brad claims it is the first of its kind in NSW to utilise every relevant futurebuild product.

The young local builder on the project, Ben Richardson, was chosen because of his attitude to newer products and methods of construction. "He had used Hybeam in the past and was into new products," says Brad, "He is looking for innovative products. He installed the products quickly without any problems and in half the time it would take with traditional products." Ease of installation for the whole house saved both Brad and Ben time and money.

All of the products proved reliable and cost efficient as Brad knew they would and the futurebuild showcase house is now at lock-up stage and around three months away from liveable. Brad is looking forward to moving in and standing by the products he has spent many years recommending to others.
