Description and Applications

hyJOIST is an engineered I-Joist manufactured using structural LVL flanges and a plywood web connected using a Type A waterproof bond.

Applications

hyJOIST is suitable for structural applications including residential and commercial floor and roof  rafter systems, and industrial purlins.  hyJOIST is not intended to support brickwork or other heavy masonry products.

Treatment for Durability

hyJOIST H2-S Terminator is available in all sizes and is part of the Carter Holt Harvey Terminator range.  hyJOIST H2-S Terminator is treated against termites south of the Tropic of Capricorn.  The treatment is applied to the glueline during manufacture to achieve full termite protection to the core of the beam.  No further sealing is required on cut ends or holes.

Moisture content

hyJOIST, at time of despatch from the manufacturing site has a moisture content of between 8-15%.

Structural grading

The properties of hyJOIST have been determined by testing as required by AS/NZS 4357, and are not substitutable for F grades, MGP grade, or other proprietary I-joists.  Design verification using the Carter Holt Harvey free designIT software or selection guide (located in the hyJOIST design guide) is required to ensure suitability.

Certification & Compliance

hyJOIST flanges are manufactured in accordance with AS/NZS 4357, and the plywood web is manufactured in accordance with AS/NZS 2269.  hyJOIST is product certified by the Engineered Wood Products Association of Australasia (EWPAA), which is JAS-ANZ certified.  Participation and compliance with this process based quality control scheme ensures ‘Evidence of Suitability’ in accordance with Clause 1.2.2 of the Building Code of Australia (BCA).

Formaldehyde Emissions

All hyJOIST is manufactured using an 'A' Bond with less than 0.3mg/l Formaldehyde (equivalent to Super E0) emissions from the final product.

Technical Literature

See the brochure tab for all available literature related to hyJOIST.

Handling and Installation

Storage

The following recommendations regarding storage are made in order to ensure that the full benefits of hyJOIST as a dry, straight and true material are available at the time of installation.

  1. Stack on level bearers to keep flat and straight.
  2. Stack well clear of the ground for good ventilation.
  3. Store under cover to keep dry prior to installation.

Note: After installation, exposure to sun and rain for normal periods of construction is not a cause for concern.

General Installation

hyJOIST should be installed strictly in accordance with the details supplied in the hyJOIST Installation Guide.

Technical Note: Rimboard

Carter Holt Harvey sometimes receive requests to assist specifiers with technical advice on other generic products when used in conjunction with hySPAN LVL and hyJOIST Engineered I-Joists. The following Technical Note entitled 'Rimboard' is an example of this - Download.

Racking Through Floors

Modern house designs often feature large open plan living areas with large windows or doors to 'bring the outdoors inside'. In two storey houses this normally means deep section engineered floor joists capable of spanning over lower level open areas.

hyJOIST Cantilevers

hyJOIST floor joists are capable of meeting the loading requirements for cantilevers as defined in AS/NZS 1170. For external use, hyJOIST floor joists must be protected from becoming wet by a fully waterproof deck. In the case of non-waterproofed decks the use of outriggers of suitable natural durability or preservative treated to H3 as per AS/NZS 1604 is suggested. Outriggers can also provide a step down to the deck reducing the likelihood of water ingress at openings.
More information is contained in the hyJOIST design guide and hyJOIST installation guide.

Health & Safety

The MSDS available from the website details all health and safety precautions required when using hyJOIST

Environmental certification

hyJOIST is manufactured from 100% renewable plantation timber. All timber is sourced from Australian Forestry Standard and/or FSC certified forests.

Hybeam H2 - not on the menu.

Termites cause over $80 million damage each year in Australia. They cost us more than fire, flood and storms. Yet you cannot insure against termite damage.

For years, the building industry has been asking for a solution to the havoc termites wreak on timber products in Australia. Until now, the best they could get was surface treated or pressure impregnated timber, which often required additional treatment on-site. In many instances chemically treated timber requires the re-sealing of cut, bored or drilled pieces making life difficult for a tradesperson.

Enter futurebuild. futurebuild has been developing engineered building products and solutions for the building industry for nearly 20 years. Hybeam Engineered I-Joists are a perfect example. They’re strong, light and easy to handle and have proven to be a highly successful product. And now they’re even better. An H2 treatment has been added to the Hybeam glue line of all beams manufactured for the Australian market providing effective, safe protection from termites and other insects in above ground, interior flooring and framing applications. Hybeam H2 is perhaps the most ingenious development in recent years. In addition it is sealed with a bright yellow water resistant coating for moisture protection and easy identification on-site.

Denis Tosin, futurebuild’s Australian Market Manager gives an overview, “Our latest innovation in the Hybeam H2 treated I-Joist comes from many years of requests from the building industry to provide a solution for termites.”

Denis continues, “There are several great innovative solutions available such as Granitgard, Termimesh, even reticulation systems, along with several chemical barriers with most requiring careful attention to installation or maintenance. Unfortunately termites can enter from the most unusual areas and it is common for them to enter via service penetrations made for pipes and wiring.”

Denis adds, “Our Hybeam H2 treated I-Joist is not so much a brand new invention but given that it has the preservative added to the glue line, it is treated to the core, so to speak.” Jim Creffield, scientist for CSIRO Forestry and Forest Products confirmed the good news when he recently conducted a series of laboratory and field trials on Hybeam H2.

Jim explains his findings, “Hybeam performed exceptionally well against Coptotermes acinaciformis, Australia’s most economically important species of subterranean termite, in both the CSIRO Forestry and Forest Products laboratory as well as in the field in the Tropics of the Northern Territory. The glue used in the manufacture of Hybeam H2 contains the insecticide bifenthrin. After manufacture of Hybeam H2 the insecticide is ‘locked up’ in the glue line and is highly effective as a repellent against termites.” Jim adds, “Bifenthrin has already proven to be a successful soil termiticide, is used in some household insect sprays and in many commercial agricultural applications, so to see it now being applied as a glue line treatment of wood products is an exciting development.” H2 treated Hybeam is manufactured to provide termite resistance equivalent to AS1604 Hazard Level 2 for all of Australia south of the tropic of Capricorn. It also conforms to the NSW Timber Marketing Act and the Queensland Timber Utilisation and Marketing Act.

What does this all mean for the builder? Hybeam H2 does not require any re-sealing or follow up maintenance, making it easier for the builder, plumber, electrician or heating/air conditioning tradesman to install any services. And then there’s the peace of mind for builder and owner alike.

Denis Tosin enthuses, “In general, I believe that we mould and shape ourselves closely to the needs of the builder, architect and designer as well as making it easier for stockists to handle our products. We are excited by this new initiative and whilst Hybeam H2 is not a new product, it is a new solution.” One that termites will find highly unappetising, no doubt.
