Description and Applications

 

hyJOIST is an engineered I-Joist manufactured using structural LVL flanges and a plywood web connected using a Type A waterproof bond.

Applications

hyJOIST is suitable for structural applications including residential and commercial floor and roof  rafter systems, and industrial purlins.  hyJOIST is not intended to support brickwork or other heavy masonry products.

Treatment for Durability

hyJOIST H2-S Terminator is available in all sizes and is part of the Carter Holt Harvey Terminator range.  hyJOIST H2-S Terminator is treated against termites south of the Tropic of Capricorn.  The treatment is applied to the glueline during manufacture to achieve full termite protection to the core of the beam.  No further sealing is required on cut ends or holes.

Moisture content

hyJOIST, at time of despatch from the manufacturing site has a moisture content of between 8-15%.

Structural grading

The properties of hyJOIST have been determined by testing as required by AS/NZS 4357, and are not substitutable for F grades, MGP grade, or other proprietary I-joists.  Design verification using the Carter Holt Harvey free designIT software or selection guide (located in the hyJOIST design guide) is required to ensure suitability.

Certification & Compliance

hyJOIST flanges are manufactured in accordance with AS/NZS 4357, and the plywood web is manufactured in accordance with AS/NZS 2269.  hyJOIST is product certified by the Engineered Wood Products Association of Australasia (EWPAA), which is JAS-ANZ certified.  Participation and compliance with this process based quality control scheme ensures ‘Evidence of Suitability’ in accordance with Clause 1.2.2 of the Building Code of Australia (BCA).

Formaldehyde Emissions

All hyJOIST is manufactured using an 'A' Bond with less than 0.3mg/l Formaldehyde (equivalent to Super E0) emissions from the final product.

Handling and Installation

Storage

The following recommendations regarding storage are made in order to ensure that the full benefits of hyJOIST as a dry, straight and true material are available at the time of installation.

  1. Stack on level bearers to keep flat and straight.
  2. Stack well clear of the ground for good ventilation.
  3. Store under cover to keep dry prior to installation.

Note: After installation, exposure to sun and rain for normal periods of construction is not a cause for concern.

 

General Installation

hyJOIST should be installed strictly in accordance with the details supplied in the hyJOIST Installation Guide.

Racking Through Floors

Modern house designs often feature large open plan living areas with large windows or doors to 'bring the outdoors inside'. In two storey houses this normally means deep section engineered floor joists capable of spanning over lower level open areas.

hyJOIST Cantilevers

hyJOIST floor joists are capable of meeting the loading requirements for cantilevers as defined in AS/NZS 1170. For external use, hyJOIST floor joists must be protected from becoming wet by a fully waterproof deck. In the case of non-waterproofed decks the use of outriggers of suitable natural durability or preservative treated to H3 as per AS/NZS 1604 is suggested. Outriggers can also provide a step down to the deck reducing the likelihood of water ingress at openings.

Timber beats steel in a feat of 'Imagineering'

Outside of Gisborne near Woodend, is the site of the new Fletcher residence. The home, built in the style of the traditional American barn, was entirely prefabricated off-site. The owner, Darren Fletcher, wanted an all timber structure but the original engineer had designed the building in steel and had told Fletcher it could not be done economically in timber. Fletcher still preferred a timber structure. After discussions with a number of engineers, the owner chose Tim Gibney & Associates to do preliminary design and a cost comparison versus steel. The design and supply budget was prepared and it was significantly cheaper than steel.

Tim Gibney and Associates are specialist consulting engineers marrying structural and geotechnical engineering. They do a wide variety of engineering projects, including those in concrete and steel, and have set up Timber Imagineering, which specialises in design and fabrication of timber buildings. The Woodend barn style dwelling is just the kind of project they are set up for.

The two-storey house is 12 metres wide by 24 metres long, a modular design with portals at 6 metre centres. The portals are Hyspan Structural LVL sections and the floor joists and roof purlins are hyBEAM Engineered I-Joists, both manufactured by futurebuild. The entire structure was prefabricated in a warehouse. The timber portals were fabricated in sections and then transported to the site and assembled on the slab and lifted by crane into position. The portals were rebated to allow for hidden steel gusset plates that occur at the junctions where the timber changes directions. The base plates were fixed off to the cast in plate holding the timber to the footing. Using an engineered designed footing system the portal frame size was minimised.

Robert Nestic of Timber Imagineering explains why the futurebuild engineered building products were chosen: "We used the futurebuild LVL because of the guarantee of supply and material properties. LVL has high strength and reliability, suitable for these types of structures and is available in long lengths and in a large range of sizes."

After prefabrication, the lower sections of the portals were sent for LOSP treatment, as the region is a termite prone area. The timber building system allowed the owner to complete the construction with conventional carpentry techniques. This led to the significant cost savings.

Timber construction was not only possible but was a cost advantage, resulting in a timber structure Fletcher had originally imagined.
