Description and Applications

hyJOIST is an engineered I-Joist manufactured using structural LVL flanges and a plywood web connected using a Type A waterproof bond.

Applications

hyJOIST is suitable for structural applications including residential and commercial floor and roof  rafter systems, and industrial purlins.  hyJOIST is not intended to support brickwork or other heavy masonry products.

Treatment for Durability

hyJOIST H2-S Terminator is available in all sizes and is part of the Carter Holt Harvey Terminator range.  hyJOIST H2-S Terminator is treated against termites south of the Tropic of Capricorn.  The treatment is applied to the glueline during manufacture to achieve full termite protection to the core of the beam.  No further sealing is required on cut ends or holes.

Moisture content

hyJOIST, at time of despatch from the manufacturing site has a moisture content of between 8-15%.

Structural grading

The properties of hyJOIST have been determined by testing as required by AS/NZS 4357, and are not substitutable for F grades, MGP grade, or other proprietary I-joists.  Design verification using the Carter Holt Harvey free designIT software or selection guide (located in the hyJOIST design guide) is required to ensure suitability.

Certification & Compliance

hyJOIST flanges are manufactured in accordance with AS/NZS 4357, and the plywood web is manufactured in accordance with AS/NZS 2269.  hyJOIST is product certified by the Engineered Wood Products Association of Australasia (EWPAA), which is JAS-ANZ certified.  Participation and compliance with this process based quality control scheme ensures ‘Evidence of Suitability’ in accordance with Clause 1.2.2 of the Building Code of Australia (BCA).

Formaldehyde Emissions

All hyJOIST is manufactured using an 'A' Bond with less than 0.3mg/l Formaldehyde (equivalent to Super E0) emissions from the final product.

Handling and Installation

Storage

The following recommendations regarding storage are made in order to ensure that the full benefits of hyJOIST as a dry, straight and true material are available at the time of installation.

  1. Stack on level bearers to keep flat and straight.
  2. Stack well clear of the ground for good ventilation.
  3. Store under cover to keep dry prior to installation.

Note: After installation, exposure to sun and rain for normal periods of construction is not a cause for concern.

General Installation

hyJOIST should be installed strictly in accordance with the details supplied in the hyJOIST Installation Guide.

Technical Note: Rimboard

Carter Holt Harvey sometimes receive requests to assist specifiers with technical advice on other generic products when used in conjunction with hySPAN LVL and hyJOIST Engineered I-Joists. The following Technical Note entitled 'Rimboard' is an example of this - Download.

Racking Through Floors

Modern house designs often feature large open plan living areas with large windows or doors to 'bring the outdoors inside'. In two storey houses this normally means deep section engineered floor joists capable of spanning over lower level open areas.

hyJOIST Cantilevers

hyJOIST floor joists are capable of meeting the loading requirements for cantilevers as defined in AS/NZS 1170. For external use, hyJOIST floor joists must be protected from becoming wet by a fully waterproof deck. In the case of non-waterproofed decks the use of outriggers of suitable natural durability or preservative treated to H3 as per AS/NZS 1604 is suggested. Outriggers can also provide a step down to the deck reducing the likelihood of water ingress at openings.
More information is contained in the hyJOIST design guide and hyJOIST installation guide.

Health & Safety

The MSDS available from the website details all health and safety precautions required when using hyJOIST

Environmental certification

hyJOIST is manufactured from 100% renewable plantation timber. All timber is sourced from Australian Forestry Standard and/or FSC certified forests.

Hybeam & Hyspan

A peaceful place to retire thanks to LVL floors

Situated on the stunning headland at Bastion Point, ‘Eastcliff on Orakei’ is more luxury resort than retirement village. With a swimming pool, townhouses and sweeping views from the homes and surrounding grounds, it’s a place where the well to do of Auckland can retire in style. Architect Michael Bilsborough, of Aucklandbased firm Babbage Consultants, discusses how futurebuild LVL products helped him keep the Eastcliff development a cut above and completely squeak free.

While the architects at Babbage are predominantly involved in retirement developments, or other large projects such as schools or universities, the Eastcliff development at Orakei had a slightly different brief.

The site of this project, on Auckland’s famous Bastion Point, is in prime position on the ridge of the headland overlooking the harbour with the much sought after view of volcanic Rangitoto Island. Given these highly marketable views and Eastcliff’s situation in the up-market area of Orakei, Michael was well aware of his potential customers. The twenty-four townhouses and thirty or so apartments are aimed at over fifty-fives who would be looking for something more than the plain environs of the typical ‘retirement village.’ His focus then was on the detail, both in construction and design.

“The client wanted a Mediterranean style, with a classical feel,” explains Michael. To achieve this effect, the townhouses and the nursing home that is also on site feature monolithic cladding, plasterwork with cornices and mouldings and are completed with tiled roofs.

As the townhouses are two storey terrace style, Michael was keen to avoid the common problem of squeak in the mid-floor that can happen when using timber. To avoid this, he relied on futurebuild’s whole flooring system, an integrated system using Hyspan and Hybeam and the flooring that goes over the top of the beams. “If timber is not installed properly” says Michael, “you get squeaks, nails popping and boards moving. You don’t want that at the upper end part of the market.” He relied on futurebuild’s flooring system for each mid-floor, so that installation and squeaky floor problems could be avoided.

Michael had not used Hyspan or Hybeam before but as he says, “I had spoken to the futurebuild technical reps and Hyspan and Hybeam always seemed like a good idea, like sensible products.” As he soon found the fact that Hyspan is available in long, straight lengths while solid timbers are not, was a definite advantage at construction stage. Installation of the flooring system was easier and so was cost-competitive.

Michael was also impressed with the ease with which services, such as plumbing, could be run through the timber in the mid-floor. The ability to cut large holes in the Hybeam I-joists and run services through means that the whole flooring construction can be much more compact, there is no need to create expensive bulkheads underneath the mid-floor to run the services.

Overall, construction went smoothly using the futurebuild products and the additional services offered. According to Michael, assistance with the design of the floor framing was particularly useful and no problems were encountered along the way.

The show homes at ‘Eastcliff on Orakei’ are almost completed, and while a number of townhouses have already been sold, after the official opening many more sales are sure to follow. This is just the first stage in the development (there are five stages planned in all), with stage two to get underway in the next couple of months.
