edgeFORM offers strong support for inner city Perth
In the middle of January this year Derwent Constructions began construction on yet another inner city development in Subiaco, five minutes from Perth's city centre.
This 10 storey block of strata titled luxury apartments called West Court Towers, is typical of the direction in which this area of Perth is going. The area used to be mainly professionals, solicitor's offices and doctor's surgery's but is leaning more toward residential developments.
This trend for inner city living, found in most urban centres around Australia, means that sizeable blocks of apartments are now in great demand. In building West Court Towers, Derwent Constructions ensured the structure was stable and well supported from the ground up. The structural engineers Meir, Chadwick Whitmore were consulted and Russell Williams a formworker from Ausform Constructions was brought in.
After 35 years 'in the game' as a formworker, Williams referred to West Court Towers as your run of the mill job and in recent years they would certainly be common. However with 10 storeys to go up it was also a large one. Williams had to form up a concrete transfer slab that was stable enough to hold up the rest of the building.
Such an important part of the structure requires heavy density concrete, he explained. To be optimally effective the transfer slab must be well supported and protected. In this case Williams used in excess of 200 cubic metres of Ecoply Formite, truFORM and edgeFORM LVL by Carter Holt Harvey Wood Products in the formwork system. One hundred and seventy Boards were used to form up step downs and rebates in the transfer slab. edgeFORM is specifically designed to offer structural support and easily identifiable by the distinctive orange coating to assist in moisture protection.
edgeFORM is a relatively recent development itself. As Williams says: 'I used to use oregon or hemlock which tended to twist and bow. This stuff is beautiful to work with because it stays straight and does the job the way it should be done'.
With the demand growing for such multi-storey apartment blocks in the inner city the demand for quality formwork and formworkers is only likely to increase. You could say that Russell Williams and edgeFORM will be in solid work for years to come.
