Description and Applications

hySPAN is structural laminated veneer lumber (LVL) which has been manufactured in accordance with AS/NZS 4357. hySPAN is manufactured from plantation timber, which is rotary peeled, dried, and laminated together in continuous long lengths. The veneers are bonded together using a Type ‘A’ (marine) bond, which has proven performance for in excess of 50 years. hySPAN is produced with a minimum grade ‘D’ face and is not generally used for appearance applications.

Properties and Identification

The properties of hySPAN solutions range have been determined by testing as required by AS/NZS 4357. Free designIT software or span tables can be used to specify hySPAN beam sizes for houses or similar structures. Alternatively, the product specification and properties for design to AS1720.1 are available at » here

Applications

hySPAN is suitable for all structural applications in residential, commercial, industrial and rural applications (following design verification). hySPAN is not intended to support brickwork or other heavy masonry products.

Termite Protected

hySPAN H2-S Terminator is available in all sizes and is part of the Carter Holt Harvey Terminator range. hySPAN H2-S Terminator is treated against termites south of the Tropic of Capricorn. The treatment is applied to the glueline during manufacture to achieve full termite protection to the core of the beam. No further sealing is required on cut ends, holes or notches.

Other treatment levels are available from suppliers on request, but treatment is limited to above ground use. hySPAN cannot be readily treated for in ground contact applications.

Environmental certification

Carter Holt Harvey ensures that its wood is legally sourced from managed forests and offer FSC ‘Chain of Custody’ certified upon request for green star points. Both hySPAN PROJECT and hySPAN+ are manufactured using an ‘A’ Bond with less than 0.5mg/l Formaldehyde (equivalent to E0) emissions from the final product.

Moisture content

hySPAN, at time of despatch from the manufacturing site has a moisture content of between 8-15%.

Certification & Compliance

Carter Holt Harvey Woodproducts is committed to manufacturing innovative engineered building products. For quality assurance the hySPAN range is manufactured with independent audit processes and product certification.

Formaldehyde Emissions

All hySPAN is manufactured using an 'A' Bond with less than 0.5mg/l Formaldehyde emissions from the final product.

Technical Literature

Handling and Installation

Storage

The following recommendations regarding storage are made in order to ensure that the full benefits of hySPAN as a dry, straight and true material are available at the time of installation.

  1. Stack on level bearers to keep flat and straight.
  2. Stack well clear of the ground for good ventilation.
  3. Store under cover to keep dry prior to installation.

Note: After installation, exposure to sun and rain for normal periods of construction is not a cause for concern.

Installation

hySPAN may be installed and fixed in exactly the same way as seasoned timber.  AS1684 contains many standard details for fixing of timber members which can be utilised as required.  In order to determine the capacity of fasteners used with hySPAN, joint group JD4 properties shall be taken to apply.

Health & Safety

The MSDS available from the website details all health and safety precautions required when using hySPAN

Common Installation Details (for residential framing)

The following common hySPAN installation details should be followed where required. Further advice can be found in the installation details section of the Carter Holt Harvey designIT software.

Notches, cuts and holes in beams, bearers, joists and rafters

Notches, cuts and holes in beams, bearers, joists and rafter members specified within this brochure may have penetrations and notches performed in accordance with AS1684.2, Clause 4.1.6 and Figure 4.1. Guidance for the common holes through
the thickness and depth is provided below.

Connections

Section 9 of AS1684 contains both nominal and common specific tie-down and fixing details for timber members throughout residential constructions.  When applying specific connections to hySPAN, joint group JD4 shall be used.

platform 12 - Dubbo

At the new Dubbo Clinical Education Centre

Around four years ago, Australia's Federal Government funded Universities to provide clinical training schools in rural areas. The idea behind this push was to get doctors to do their internships out in the bush hospitals so that ultimately more doctors would choose to practice in these areas. The new Dubbo Clinical Education Centre is one such project, backed by the University of Sydney. Made up of multiple buildings and set in the harsh and termite prone environment of inland New South Wales, the project relied on treated LVL by futurebuild, H2 treated Hyspan.

Bruce Litchfield was project manager on the job, based in Sydney University's facilities management office. According to Bruce the idea is to establish world-class facilities and train people in remote locations:

"We've been fortunate that experienced professors at the University have elected to set up clinics and what's happened is that kids get to carry out procedures and practice medicine...experience they would not get in the city hospitals. The courses have been well taken up, with many volunteering and they will spend several years out in the bush."

Due to the response to the project, the Dubbo Hospital is extending it. Originally the Dubbo School was just a collection of "borrowed rooms and shoe cupboards," says Bruce.

The new buildings, started in May 2003, will house many of the resident students with six double and twenty single rooms available for accommodation in five buildings around a central courtyard. There are labs and seminar rooms, with training space for around 30 - 40 students per round. The Clinical Education Centre also includes administration buildings for the trainee doctors. The project site itself is adjacent to Dubbo Base and Private Hospitals.

Designer Peter Yeh of Alasdair Macdonald Architects designed the buildings and Bob Chapman of Rawson Constructions tendered for and won the contract for the construction of the complex. It was the architect and the engineers from George Clark and Associates who specified the treated Hyspan for the job. H2 treated structural LVL is protected against infestation from termites and other insects. The lightweight product was treated to Hazard Level 2 with Light Organic Solvent Preservatives (known as LOSP) by Dindas Lew Australia. The treatment process provides the LVL with a termiticide that both repels termites or kills them if they eat the treated timber. Given the declining availability of termite resistant hardwoods and conservation concerns, treated plantation pine like Hyspan, has soared in popularity.

Bob Chapman was pleased with this option for the Clinical Education Centre. "Using environmentally friendly plantation timber was an advantage. Our company like most companies these days is very conscious of the environment. And, in this case to do what the architect wanted to do, with the LVL, was practical too. The H2 treatment was important to give extra life to the timber." During construction the rafters were left exposed to some extreme weather conditions before the roofing was put over them: There was periods of rain followed by temperatures above 400C. Bob was pleased to note that there was minimal dimensional movement of the Hyspan.

The other advantage was the lengths possible with Hyspan. The Hyspan was used as roof rafters in the large rooms at the Centre. The rafters single spanned over most of the buildings with the ceiling attached directly to the underside. The rafters provided good fixing that complied with all the requirements for plasterboard installation into JD4 material and so eliminated the need for battens. The LVL was easier to handle during construction of the roof. "We achieved good clean open spaces, large room areas with simple construction," says Bob.

Again, using Hyspan with its long lengths also meant Bob could consider the environment. "You'd never get timbers that size in natural timbers. You don't want to be cutting down trees that size."

The Dubbo Clinical Education Centre is now near completion and will soon be enticing many more young doctors out into the bush for the unique experience offered at the Centre. Of the total seven buildings, four are done with another three still under construction. The project has been well supported by the hospitals and by the Dubbo community, and by the environmentally friendly and reliable construction made possible by Hyspan H2 by futurebuild.
