hySPAN is structural laminated veneer lumber (LVL) which has been manufactured in accordance with AS/NZS 4357. hySPAN is manufactured from plantation timber, which is rotary peeled, dried, and laminated together in continuous long lengths. The veneers are bonded together using a Type ‘A’ (marine) bond, which has proven performance for in excess of 50 years. hySPAN is produced with a minimum grade ‘D’ face and is not generally used for appearance applications.
The properties of hySPAN solutions range have been determined by testing as required by AS/NZS 4357. Free designIT software or span tables can be used to specify hySPAN beam sizes for houses or similar structures. Alternatively, the product specification and properties for design to AS1720.1 are available at » here
hySPAN is suitable for all structural applications in residential, commercial, industrial and rural applications (following design verification). hySPAN is not intended to support brickwork or other heavy masonry products.
hySPAN H2-S Terminator is available in all sizes and is part of the Carter Holt Harvey Terminator range. hySPAN H2-S Terminator is treated against termites south of the Tropic of Capricorn. The treatment is applied to the glueline during manufacture to achieve full termite protection to the core of the beam. No further sealing is required on cut ends, holes or notches.
Other treatment levels are available from suppliers on request, but treatment is limited to above ground use. hySPAN cannot be readily treated for in ground contact applications.
Environmental certificationCarter Holt Harvey ensures that its wood is legally sourced from managed forests and offer FSC ‘Chain of Custody’ certified upon request for green star points. Both hySPAN PROJECT and hySPAN+ are manufactured using an ‘A’ Bond with less than 0.5mg/l Formaldehyde (equivalent to E0) emissions from the final product.
hySPAN, at time of despatch from the manufacturing site has a moisture content of between 8-15%.
Carter Holt Harvey Woodproducts is committed to manufacturing innovative engineered building products. For quality assurance the hySPAN range is manufactured with independent audit processes and product certification.
All hySPAN is manufactured using an 'A' Bond with less than 0.5mg/l Formaldehyde emissions from the final product.
See the brochure tab for all available literature related to hySPAN.
The following recommendations regarding storage are made in order to ensure that the full benefits of hySPAN as a dry, straight and true material are available at the time of installation.
Note: After installation, exposure to sun and rain for normal periods of construction is not a cause for concern.
hySPAN may be installed and fixed in exactly the same way as seasoned timber. AS1684 contains many standard details for fixing of timber members which can be utilised as required. In order to determine the capacity of fasteners used with hySPAN, joint group JD4 properties shall be taken to apply.
The MSDS available from the website details all health and safety precautions required when using hySPAN
The following common hySPAN installation details should be followed where required. Further advice can be found in the installation details section of the Carter Holt Harvey designIT software.

Notches, cuts and holes in beams, bearers, joists and rafter members specified within this brochure may have penetrations and notches performed in accordance with AS1684.2, Clause 4.1.6 and Figure 4.1. Guidance for the common holes through
the thickness and depth is provided below.

Section 9 of AS1684 contains both nominal and common specific tie-down and fixing details for timber members throughout residential constructions. When applying specific connections to hySPAN, joint group JD4 shall be used.

New hySPAN H2 - not just a surface treatmenthySPAN H2 offers all the benefits of hySPAN with added termite deterrent qualities. hySPAN H2 is treated to the core to Hazard Level 2 with DeterMite. A unique treatment is applied during manufacture to every glueline. Good news considering the annual cost of termite damage in Australia often exceeds that of fire, flood and storms. You cannot insure against termites, but with futurebuild technology you can take effective preventative steps. Denis Tosin, Market Manager from futurebuild explains, "For a great many years the market has been demanding a termite solution. Particularly in the country. Everyone was ready for it, asking for it. The Plywood Association was ready to help too. Through glue technology - by adding DeterMite into the glue during manufacture - we've had a path forward for a system to be developed. Application to I Joists with our Hybeam H2 product was the first logical step. Application to our hySPAN product is a natural progression." Denis adds: "hySPAN compliments the Hybeam range but goes into many more applications - floor joists, beams, lintels, roof rafters and more. And now hySPAN H2 offers all those benefits with added termite deterrent qualities." According to Denis, the DeterMite treatment is especially effective because it is not simply a surface treatment. "The DeterMite is added to every glueline during manufacture of the laminated veneer layers so there is no need to reseal end cuts. The main ingredient is Bifenthrin. It's a safe, odourless treatment which achieves full termite protection from the surface to the core of the beam. "The treatment is guaranteed to be effective for up to 25 years. It is cost effective protection against termite structural damage and is non-corrosive to nails and fixing plates." How do you know hySPAN H2 is on site? Denis explains "Easy. It's coloured bright yellow and is clearly marked with the hySPAN H2 brand." And choices? Denis adds, "The hySPAN range is available H2 treated in four thicknesses: 36 mm, 45 mm, 63 mm and 75 mm." And for the technically inclined, H2 treated hySPAN is manufactured to provide termite resistance equivalent to AS 1604 Hazard Level 2 for areas of Australia south of the Tropic of Capricorn. It also conforms to the NSW Timber Marketing Act and the Queensland Timber Utilisation and Marketing Act. hySPAN H2 is approved for use in applications which can be described as 'interior or protected above ground'. This is equivalent to Hazard Level 2 as defined in AS 1604 Specification for Preservative Treatment - Part 3: Plywood, and Part 4: Laminated Veneer Lumber (LVL). With all that said, hySPAN H2 is therefore not suitable for situations that will be exposed to weather or dampness such as ground contact. We asked Denis Tosin about the growing market for hySPAN H2. "Country builders are using hySPAN H2 much more widely now because that's where the termite problem is quite substantial. And of course, the risk is big in some city areas." What about the cost conscious? "Volume builders are also beginning to see the value in using futurebuild's H2 products. Even though they have to be very price conscious they can also see the comfort and protection termite treatment gives. And when you consider the premium is so minimal, why not?" Denis sums it up this way: "hySPAN H2 is a truly valuable addition to our range. It gives the homeowner peace of mind for what is often their greatest asset. And it's simple and safe." The futurebuild H2 range ensures that wherever you use hySPAN H2 and Hybeam H2 from subfloors to roof rafters, it'll be bad news for termites. Good news for you. |
