Ecoply Plygroove Lining is compliant with AS/NZS 2269 and is PAA JAS/ANZ accredited.

Plygroove can be used in compliance with the Building Code of Australia as follows

Plygroove is a structural plywood that is the only wood based panel material with design value under Australian and New Zealand timber engineering codes. Plygroove complies with the requirements of NZS 3604 and may be used in accordance with AS 1684.

Plygroove will last in excess of 50 years in dry interior spaces. In wet areas like kitchens, bathrooms or laundries, Plygroove should be protected from water by good quality paints or coatings.

Attack from common household borer is unlikely or will be at an acceptably low level provided the plywood is kept dry. For termite protection, Plygroove should be designed and maintained in accordance with AS 3660; however, for exposed situations Plygroove requires proper treatment to MP3640 or AS 1604.

Plygroove is supplied at the correct moisture content for interior use. It should be protected from dampness throughout delivery, storage on site and during construction.

Plygroove has been tested for Early Fire Hazard properties. It can be used in any occupancy when the surface finish on the plywood has an index below that which is required.

Thermal Insulation

Plywood has a thermal conductivity of 0.13 W/mK and adds 0.1 to the R value of wall or roof assemblies. In design the whole assembly including enclosed air and insulation should be considered.

Available untreated or H3.1 LOSP treated on request (minimum order quantities apply).

  • Plygroove Lining features a tongue and groove profile on the long edge.

Technical Notes

Plygroove lining is lightweight and easy to install with no special tools required.

Framing centres are in Table 3. The tongue and groove joint on 12mm sheets does not need support, however all other edges do.

Maximum frame centres (mm):

Plywood thickness (mm)

1. Fixed vertically, maximum stud spacing without nogs or dwangs

2. Fixed vertically, maximum nog spacing on studs at wider centres than 1

3. Fixed horizontally, maximum stud spacing

Ceiling or soffits:
4. Face grain across framing, under or over frame, maximum spacing

Mezzanine floor/ceiling:
5. Over joists, face grain across joists, maximum spacing

Closer spacings are recommended in high impact areas e.g. bars, gyms, industrial or crowded spaces. In damp situations, allowance should be made for swelling.

Use 40mm x 2.0mm panel pins at 150mm centres at sheet edges and 300mm centres on intermediate supports. If back nailing over rafters use 40mm x 2.5mm galvanised flat head nails.

Use No. 8 gauge x 40mm screws on timber framing and 10- 16-45 self-drilling, self-tapping screws on steel. Select screw head to suit architectural details.

Panels may be fixed with a bead of elastomeric construction adhesive either by nailing at 150mm centres on all glued surface, or by applying pressure and cure time in accordance with the glue manufacturer’s instructions. Use glues to American Plywood Association Specification AFG 01 (e.g. Max Bond, Sturdi Bond, Nortons Floormate).

Curved components

Minimum bending radius:

Thickness (mm)

Along face (m)

Across face (m)

High quality paints, stains or clear finishes are recommended for Plygroove.

  • Tinted clear finishes provide a full range of architectural options that show the warmth of wood while reducing yellowing and other ultraviolet effects.
  • High gloss finishes and paints tend to highlight natural and manufactured characteristics of plywood such as changes in grain and beat marks from the sanding.
  • Matt finishes and paints provide a natural timber finish.

In applying finishes to Plygroove, the following precautions are advised:

  • Avoid using inflexible coatings (such as expoxies) that may crack on movement of the wood as Plygroove is a wood-based product that that responds to change in humidity.
  • It is an advantage to prefinish panels prior to installation for ceilings and similar applications.
  • Punch nails before finishing and apply a first coat (clear, primer or sealer) before filling punched holes to minimise dryout and staining.
  • Use the coating manufacturer’s specifications.

Soffit linings

Plygroove can be used to line under the eaves of buildings. Good quality paint or stain is recommended to protect the untreated plywood from intermittent wetting and windblown moisture. If the softfit is very exposed or in large overhangs, preservative treatment should be considered. Do not use water-based treatments on Plygroove.

Storage and Handling

  • Keep dry.
  • Store under cover (avoid tight cover and potential condensation).
  • Handle and stack with care to avoid damage.

Available from stockists, merchants and agents throughout Australia, New Zealand, Pacific Islands and some Asian countries.

All statements in this manual shall be read subject to the plywood being properly stored, handled, installed, used and maintained as appropriate to each application in accordance with this brochure and subject to the governing codes of practice.
